How do I recognize that a pinch analysis is sensible to use?
Pinch analyses are suitable for the energy optimization of existing plants or thermal systems that are still in the conceptual phase. Since data collection and analysis involve some effort, the considered energy system should have annual thermal energy costs of at least 200 to 300 kCHF to justify the analysis effort. Pinch analysis can be used for continuously operating plants, systems with multiple operating cases, or in discontinuous operation (batch or batch processes).
Areas of application for pinch analyses are:
- Leisure facilities, shopping centers, wellness facilities, hotel/building complex with heating and cooling requirements at different temperature levels.
- Complex infrastructure systems such as hospitals or large passenger ships.
- Energy supply systems such as district heating networks, complex central heating centers, e.g. with electricity generation (including wood gasification plants) and CO2 sequestration.
- Energy-intensive industrial companies.
